Bolero — Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro (2023–2024)
Originally created with choreographer Ricardo Amarante for the Abay Opera and Ballet Theatre in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in 2019, Bolero was restaged at Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro in 2023 and 2024. The scenographic and costume design remained faithful to the original conception, while selected elements were adapted to the Brazilian context.
The Abay Opera Theatre (also known as the Abay Kazakh National Opera and Ballet Theatre) is a monumental Stalinist-era building that blends Italian Neoclassical and Kazakh architectural elements. This iconic cultural space framed the original creation in 2019, establishing the visual and symbolic tone of the work.
For the Rio performances, the design preserved that original aesthetic while adapting set materials to those available and safe in Brazil, and reconfiguring certain costume patterns for the female dancers. These adjustments, driven by practical and contextual considerations, ensured the production retained its visual and choreographic coherence while responding to the specific conditions of the new staging.
