4 x Rousseau — Cie. La Ronde (2024)
4 x Rousseau was commissioned by Cie. La Ronde for its world premiere in March 2024 at Theater Winterthur, with subsequent performances at Grosse Halle Bern and Tanz in Olten. The evening brought together choreographers Caroline Finn, Ihsan Rustem, Luca Signoretti, and Sarafina Beck, each responding to the ideas and contradictions of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The scenography and costume design were entrusted to Salazar for this premiere. The set was conceived as a modular structure, initially appearing as a telephone booth before elongating, breaking apart, and reconfiguring into multiple shapes. Its architecture invited the dancers to move around, climb over, and pass beneath, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior.
Light revealed shifting visual information, while the dancers themselves carried and transformed the modules during transitional scenes — a physical translation of the choreographers’ diverse visions.
This approach posed both technical and artistic challenges: designing a structure that was solid yet flexible, coherent yet playful, able to accommodate four distinct choreographic languages while remaining one scenographic body. Costumes, subdued in sepia tones, anchored the performers within this changing landscape, allowing physicality and gesture to remain central.
